You want to feel less bloaty?—stop using the salt shaker. There’s plenty of added
sodium in the foods we eat, the bread, sauces, processed meats, frozen foods, soups,
cottage cheese, and virtually any item from a can. Select canned foods labeled “low
sodium,” ”reduced sodium,” or “no salt added.” Excess salt intake is a major contributor
to high blood pressure, yet most Americans ingest 4,000 to 5,000 milligrams of sodium
a day—far more than the recommended 1,500 milligrams. If you think you’ve eaten too
much sodium at a meal—flush it out by drinking tons of water.
